It was a tight game but the Macomb’s women’s basketball team ultimately ruled on Feb. 28, beating rivals Kalamazoo Valley Community College, 42-41, and taking the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) championship title for 2014-2015.
The game matched Eastern Conference Champions (Macomb) against Western Conference Champions (Kalamazoo) at the Sports & Expo Center on South Campus. It marks the first time the lady Monarchs have been MCCAA champs, in an association that also includes one college in Indiana and another bordering Ohio.
Leading scorers for the Monarchs in the championship game were: Natalie Nowak (15), Carly Vargo (8), Sydney Morgan (7) and De’Asia Clark (7). Dayshia Vance had eight rebounds. The game brought the lady Monarch’s win/loss record to 23/6.
Both the women’s and men’s basketball teams now advance to the district playoffs, which will be held at Delta College near Bay City later this month.
