Macomb’s Information Technology Department continues its campaign to increase awareness about online and email scams by reminding students that few things in life are free.
Emails or online promotions that encourage you to provide otherwise confidential information in order to win a trip, television or some other enticing prize are to be regarded with caution. Those that ask for your Social Security number, address, birthdate or mother’s maiden are most likely the work of cyber criminals “phishing” for information that can be used for fraudulent purchases and/or purposes.
Safeguard your identity by never providing confidential personal information unless you are positive the requestor or website is legitimate. More information on phishing scams can be found at www.StopThinkConnect.org or www.OnGuardOnLine.gov.
