FastTrack your advanced degree through Walsh at the University Center

August 31, 2020 by Macomb Community College Leave a Comment

By Alexa Harris, Walsh student

When I started the transfer process at Macomb Community College, I received a great amount of guidance and support. I knew I wanted to obtain a bachelor’s degree in business, but I did not know where I wanted to go from Macomb. The University Center (UC) helped me make the best decision in continuing my education at Walsh!

I spoke with one of Walsh’s academic advisors at the UC who helped me outline a customized path to completing my bachelor’s degree in business management, focusing on my goals and future career plans. I also decided to enroll in its FastTrack program, which allowed me to complete graduate level courses toward a dual MBA and Master of Science in Management degree. Doing this gave me a head start in the master’s program while completing my undergraduate degree.

During this difficult time for everyone, I have been able to stay connected by using the Walsh Navigate Student app. I used the Study Buddies option to join a study group for each of my classes. Being provided a Zoom account has allowed my classmates and I to virtually meet and study for exams together. From Navigate Student to Walsh Connect, there are so many ways to get involved and connect with other students.

I have built great relationships with my classmates and professors during my time at Walsh. I participate in the book club organization and will soon be joining the Walsh Alumni Association!

I am looking forward to being able to say I am a Walsh alumna!

Experience real college life through Northwood at the University Center

August 4, 2020 by Macomb Community College Leave a Comment

By Amanda Schaal, Northwood University alumna

Coming from different colleges in the past, I knew that I wanted to be able to earn my associate degree as well as my bachelor’s degree. Macomb made this incredibly easy through their University Center. Northwood University was one of the universities offering programs at Macomb’s Center Campus. I knew I needed to apply so I could obtain my degree in Entertainment, Sports and Promotions Management.

Throughout my time with both educational institutions, I was able to work and get a jump start on my career through practicums, internships and real business leaders as my professors. They made it easy to work and attend school by offering online courses and in-person classes one day a week. I even saved on tuition by being able to still attend Macomb and Northwood at the same time!

If you think you will miss out on “college life,” you are wrong. I made friends and memories that will last a lifetime. I was even given a Northwood advisor on campus who helped create a personalized degree plan for me. When I was ready to take an even bigger leap into my career, they made it easy to switch my major to be able to have all online courses and still earn my degree on time! I am now part of two fantastic alumni networks, and I could not be happier or more successful in my current endeavors.

Business coaching for entrepreneurs free and online

July 21, 2020 by Macomb Community College Leave a Comment

By Ellen Lux, Director, Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship

With all the time we’ve spent at home lately, I wouldn’t be surprised if more than a few students and staff have come up with some pretty great ideas for starting a new business.

Don’t lose that momentum!  Attend one of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s (CIE) drop-in-days – via Zoom, led by our faculty.

Bob James, The CIE’s faculty-in-residence for entrepreneurship, will conduct sessions every other Monday, 7/6/20 to 8/3/20, from 1 to 3 pm.

Tanya Balcom, the CIE’s faculty-in-residence for business will conduct sessions every other Wednesday, 7/1/20 to 8/5/20, from 10 am to noon.

Both James and Balcom are full-time Macomb professors and business owners in their own right. Zoom into one of their sessions for free coaching and mentoring on how to turn your great idea into a profitable one. No appointment necessary! Just “visit” the drop-in session (above) of your choice on the appropriate date and time, or access the Zoom session you want through the college’s calendar.

Career Services @ Macomb (from a distance)

June 9, 2020 by Macomb Community College Leave a Comment

By Robert Penkala, director of Macomb’s Career Services

Even with our campuses temporarily closed, Career Services continues to be laser-focused on our students’ professional development, our campus community and the economic development needs of Macomb County.

Career Services has transitioned our services to on-line delivery and are working hard to deliver a high level of support even while working from home.

  • MacombCareerLink provides an opportunity to post updated job search documents such as your resume, cover letter or references sheet and have those reviewed by our staff; as well as look at up-to-date listings of open positions that employers are looking to fill with Macomb students and alumni
  • Our CANVAS page has 20+ resource pages with helpful information on topics from study skills to interview success, and our YouTube channel features new videos as well
  • Student Success Seminars have transitioned online and are continuing to be offered for our students and alumni – upcoming topics include Memory Skills, Research, Presentations, Stress Management and many more
  • Our Resume Guide and Interview Guide are both available online
  • Our Community Resource Guide offers suggestions for off-campus support

And, just for recent high school graduates, a free College Prep Week will be held online Aug. 3-7, providing first-time college students with strategies for succeeding in their Macomb classes this fall.

An online Job Club is also being introduced to replace on-campus visits by company recruiters, look for dates on the college calendar during the fall semester.

All of us in Career Services hope that everyone is staying safe out there. But don’t let these challenging times challenge your plans for the future. You can do it, and Career Services can help!

Access the Reading and Writing Studios from the comfort of your own home!

May 26, 2020 by Macomb Community College Leave a Comment

By Brett Griffiths
Director, Reading and Writing Studios

I am so excited to let you know that the Reading and Writing Studios are here to help you during COVID-19! We continue to offer personalized support to readers and writers in digital environments. And we’ve made it easy and simple for students to access our services.

We have expanded our online tutoring. In addition to live one-on-one appointments, we have added a “draft review” option. Now you can upload your work and questions, and you’ll receive a response by the end of the scheduled day! Through Canvas, we’re also providing expanded video tutorials, handouts, citations and other useful links.

Expanded resources are available through Canvas.

And we have great news for Macomb students! We’re providing all Macomb students a FREE license to PowerNotes, an app and browser add-on that will help with the transition to digital reading, writing and citation. Getting started is easy! Go to the PowerNotes website and create an account using your @macomb.edu email (video tutorial).

Many students have already benefited from our expanded online services. We recently heard from Suzan Shamoon, who started using the RWS to help her write a research paper prior to the campus closure. Throughout the semester, she continued to receive online tutoring on a regular basis: “I was drawing blanks until meeting Kate Lutes at the RWS. She gave me helpful advice [and] good ideas.”

Ready to schedule an online appointment? We’re ready to help you!

  • Here’s how you can reach us:
    Spring/summer hours: M-Th, 10am-4pm through Aug. 5 (closed May 25)
  • Schedule online: Visit mywco.com/macomb and log in or create an account
  • Special appointments: Contact rwstudio@macomb.edu for tutoring outside the normal hours of operation

These baristas are sweet on Macomb

March 11, 2020 by Macomb Community College Leave a Comment

By Mary Smith
Manager of Communications

I love a good hot mocha grande and I love to enjoy it alone in the ambience of a cozy cafe. But rarely do I get the chance to see my sweet and solitary indulgence pay it forward.

If you are near Center Campus on Saturday, March 14, drop into Sweetwaters Coffee and Tea on Garfield for a chai tea or cappuccino and feel a little extra warmth steaming up from your cup.

Ten percent of the proceeds of every purchase (croissant or scone anyone?) made between noon and 5 pm on March 14 will benefit Macomb’s general scholarship fund!

More funds mean more scholarships to help Macomb students stay in college! That, my friends, is a very sweet deal.

Make your voice heard in Michigan’s Primary on March 10

March 6, 2020 by Macomb Community College Leave a Comment

By Endi Piovesana, Macomb student and Campus Vote Project Democracy Fellow

On Tuesday, March 10, Michigan voters will make their voices heard on who they believe should run for president in November, and I am hoping that you plan on including your voice in the mix! Haven’t registered to vote yet? Don’t worry! You can still register at your county clerk’s office up until as well as on the day of the Michigan Primary Election.

To prepare for March 10, I encourage you to visit michigan.gov/vote to:

● Confirm you are registered to vote
● Locate your county clerk’s office – if you still need to register
● Locate your precinct – where you will go to vote
● View a sample ballot for your community
● Request an absentee ballot if you can’t make it to the polls

And finally, before you head to the polls, make sure you’re casting an informed vote by doing your research. View a sample ballot so you know what the candidates and issues are. Unsure of where the candidates stand on certain issues? Vote411.org is a fantastic resource to find information on every candidate’s platform. It will also provide you with information on any proposals that may be appearing on the ballot in your community so you can knowledgeably vote for or against them.

Ensure that your voice is heard!  Register to vote today, if you haven’t already, and head to the polls on March 10.
