Achieve your goals at any age through OU at the UC

November 2, 2020 by Macomb Community College

By Tricia Ashman, Oakland University alumna

I earned my associate degree at Macomb Community College in 1993. I planned to pursue my bachelor’s degree, but then life happened. I had a full-time job. I got married and was raising three kids. But, completing my degree was a personal goal.

In 2016, I met with Oakland University Academic Adviser Lindsay Zeig at the University Center (UC). Lindsay told me that Oakland University’s (OU) bachelor of integrative studies degree would allow me to transfer 88 credits, meaning I only needed to take 32 credits at OU. And, I could customize my courses for those 32 credits. I wanted to use my writing and interpersonal skills, so I chose communication and human resource development courses.

OU was a great choice for my bachelor’s degree. I was able to juggle my work and family commitments, taking evening courses at the UC with online courses. And, the OU faculty were incredibly understanding of my needs as a non-traditional student.

Earning my degree at 47 showed my kids it’s okay to accept life’s detours and it’s never too late to achieve your goals. With my OU degree and 30 years of professional experience, I’m ready to take on new career opportunities.

FastTrack your advanced degree through Walsh at the University Center

August 31, 2020 by Macomb Community College Leave a Comment

By Alexa Harris, Walsh student

When I started the transfer process at Macomb Community College, I received a great amount of guidance and support. I knew I wanted to obtain a bachelor’s degree in business, but I did not know where I wanted to go from Macomb. The University Center (UC) helped me make the best decision in continuing my education at Walsh!

I spoke with one of Walsh’s academic advisors at the UC who helped me outline a customized path to completing my bachelor’s degree in business management, focusing on my goals and future career plans. I also decided to enroll in its FastTrack program, which allowed me to complete graduate level courses toward a dual MBA and Master of Science in Management degree. Doing this gave me a head start in the master’s program while completing my undergraduate degree.

During this difficult time for everyone, I have been able to stay connected by using the Walsh Navigate Student app. I used the Study Buddies option to join a study group for each of my classes. Being provided a Zoom account has allowed my classmates and I to virtually meet and study for exams together. From Navigate Student to Walsh Connect, there are so many ways to get involved and connect with other students.

I have built great relationships with my classmates and professors during my time at Walsh. I participate in the book club organization and will soon be joining the Walsh Alumni Association!

I am looking forward to being able to say I am a Walsh alumna!
